Chelsea is Mal's sister.
|
Chelsea was born to parents Gemma and Saul, three years before Gemma's death by pneumonia. Her brother Malisáne was two at the time, and he quickly took to overseeing her upbringing when their father was away, as leader of the Resistance. As she grew up, she developed a deep trust in her brother.
Chelsea was less of a "good girl" in her teenage years. She got into such mischief as riding to and from the lake near her home town of Brass Gauntlet while in the nude. It was a stunt that got her into trouble with Mal, and also gave her a nasty wound on her inner thighs. But nonetheless, Mal dealt with it.
Aside from her more childish shenanigans, she had what Mal described as "poor taste in men." At age fourteen, she tried to have a relationship with Andun, an associate of Mal's. He warned her about Andun, but it wasn't until she tried to take advantage of her that she finally got out of it. But she didn't learn her lesson. Two scoundrels later, and she came upon a man named Christopher.
Christopher was the eighteen-year-old son of a prominent member of Neli's court, and he had an identical twin brother Jonathan, about whom Chelsea knew. He planned to take advantage of Chelsea, and then share the spoils with his brother by switching places with him. After the plan was set, however, he changed his mind. After having sex with fifteen-year-old Chelsea, he bragged about her to Jonathan, who asked when he would get his turn. Christopher told him to jump off a cliff, and that he didn't want to share.
As a result, Jonathan conspired to kill Chelsea and began to stalk her. Mal found out about it, and killed who he thought was Jonathan in a fit of rage. In reality, it was Christopher he killed, and Chelsea found out. She confronted him and he lost his temper. Blinded by rage, he stabbed her in the chest, missing her heart by millimeters. She slipped into a coma, and her family thought she was dead. Mal, to cover up his mistake, blamed her apparent death on Jonathan, whom she'd exposed during the argument. In killing Jonathan, Mal avenged his sister in his father's eyes, but he was still horrified to bury his daughter.
Shortly before the funeral service, a physician named Alan, who recognized Chelsea's comatose state, took her from the coffin and hid her under the care of his sons Glen and Mitchell. He sent them away in the middle of the night while he finished his business in town. His business, of course, was to collect knowledge on the Resistance and deliver it to Neli. Shortly after he sent Glen and Mitchell away, he left himself and brought Chelsea to Kaz'entelii.
He delivered what information he had gathered directly to Neli, and then revived Chelsea while Neli mobilized his soldiers to massacre Brass Gauntlet. He immediately took her already rudimentary knowledge of medicine and put it one step further and trained her as a physician. He called her his daughter and forced her to provide the family's medical care, along with everyday chores such as dishes. She hated it, but she lived with it; she schemed to get away from it.
Just to spite Alan, she began a relationship with her "adopted brother" Glen. Neither one of them considered her to be part of the family, and so they carried on the relationship in good conscience. When they married, six months after the relationship began, she was already pregnant. Glen took Chelsea away from Alan and they became physicians in Neli's court.
Five months after their marriage, Chelsea gave birth prematurely to a son, Arthur. Neli himself gave her leave to raise the baby, and weeks later left to quell an uprising in the old elven city of Fordín—a skirmish from which he never returned. Upon hearing that the new queen Mindi was the hero that defeated Neli, and that her husband was none other than her brother Mal, she was overjoyed. But Lûko, Neli's right-hand man, gave a statement to Kaz'entelii saying that he had a plan to kill the illegitimate king and queen. Chelsea went about weaning Arthur and then gave up her life as a physician in order to save Mal and his wife, and most importantly, the nation.
Neither Glen nor Chelsea were supporters of Neli's regime, and they used their position in Neli's courts as leverage to gain information. Eventually Chelsea was able to contact a soldier who had intimate knowledge of Lûko's plan. He was holding captive a girl named Juli, who held the key to the whereabouts of a dragon's egg. Lûko planned to hatch the egg and use the dragon to fight Mindi and the new regime.
A week later, Chelsea's contact told her that the sorceress Zahara was involved, and that she was manipulating Lûko with the ultimate goal of taking the throne for herself. After rewarding the contact with a large sum of money, taken from Neli's overinflated medical fund, she kissed Glen goodbye and went to Fordín.
By the time she arrived at Fordín, Mindi and Mal had already left. She didn't have the resources to stay hidden as she needed to, and she didn't have the speed to follow Mindi and Mal. So she went to the wood elves of Alusc. They gave her a recently hatched dragon, whom she immediately recognized as being the daughter of Mal's dragon Tenon's sister Sun. She named the dragon Aria, the elven word for "song", and assumed the name Adrie, given her by the wood elves.
Her plan was simple: aid Mindi in any way possible to secure the dragon egg, defeat Lûko, and kill Zahara. Being red in color, Tenon was immune to magical attacks; therefore, he was the perfect candidate for the job. As long as the dragons stuck together, they would me strong enough to defeat the sorceress. But things fell apart when Mindi and Mal split to chase separate leads in the search for Juli.
She followed Mal, confident that Mindi was headed in the right direction. She rejoiced when he refused to bow to Tayla's seductive charms, which she later admitted even she would have fallen for. Finally, word reached Tayla that Juli was free, and she took off after Mindi. Chelsea followed, only to see Tayla attack Mindi and leave her for dead.
She followed Mindi closely as she rode in a delusional state toward Fordín, keeping her alive as she went. Mindi's horse Tahmei knew about Chelsea and thought Aria was there to clean up the carcasses once Mindi was dead, but Chelsea assured her that her presence was benign. Finally, when Mindi collapsed and Sila came up on the horizon, Chelsea turned and made a wide berth, making her way back to Alusc to get her bearings.
After Mindi finally discovered her presence, she resorted to hiding her face so that she could help Mindi directly. Because everybody thought she was dead, she couldn't reveal herself and risk the entire operation. When Mindi decided to go after Mal, she seized the opportunity to complete the operation and kill Zahara, using Aria, who was now a fully grown dragon, to supplement Sila and Tenon's efforts.
In the fight against Zahara, Tenon sacrificed himself, but to no avail. Mindi and Mal thought Zahara was dead, but Chelsea knew better, and watched as Tenon clung for life and Zahara crawled away. She landed and raided the skeleton medical supply garrison in the abandoned fortress where Tenon's body lay, and used her knowledge to save his life. She loved him as a brother, but also needed him to help kill Zahara.
When he awoke, her face wasn't covered, but it didn't matter anymore, especially because he didn't recognize her. His loss of memory meant that he was not yet emotionally prepared to fight, and so she focused her time and energy on restoring him to one hundred percent. Meanwhile, Aria kept an eye on Sila, Mindi, and Mal.
Finally, Tenon demonstrated he was ready by successfully saying her real name, which she still hid from him. She then called for Aria and left Tenon to find Sila on his own. She flew off to Mindi and Mal and finally revealed her identity to them.
When she saw Mal again, she had a load of trouble convincing him she was actually alive. She eventually resorted to slapping him. When Mindi and Sila both said he was not dreaming, he finally believed them. She told the story of how Alan took her from the coffin
